In Prouilly, in the north of the Montagne de Reims, on the historic Massif de Saint-Thierry, Jean-Marie Goulard founded the winery of the same name in 1978, which today sustainably cultivates 7 hectares of vines.
Working in harmony with nature is very important to the winegrowing family, which is why Jean-Marie's son Damien began converting to organic viticulture after taking over the domaine in 2012. All 7 hectares of vines are located on the slopes of the Massif de Saint-Thierry. The diverse soil composition allows the production of unique terroir champagnes. Unusually for the Montagne, it is mainly Meunier that is grown on the slopes of the Massif, which is slimmer on the often sandy soils than in the Marne Valley.
Records in the Testament of Saint-Remy show that the first vines were cultivated on the Massif de Saint Thierry as early as 532 AD. This is mainly due to the south, south-east orientation of the vineyards. This provides the perfect microclimate for ripening. In Goulard's cellar, care is taken to process the grapes gently in order to retain the expression of the vineyard sites. Since 2012, oak barrels have been used in the cellar alongside stainless steel tanks to give some cuvées even more depth.
The champagnes from J.M. Goulard are wonderfully youthful, straightforward with lots of flavour and always characterised by a great drinking flow.
